Critique for Neill

After every workshop attendees can submit images for a final critique - this is a valueable part of the learning process. These images were taken at our recent workshop with Lulu Lockhart at Image Red studios by Neill.

I do like this image. I like the unusual pose, the way the arms and legs form interesting shapes, the heart in the hands, the light on the body.

In these cases making sure the shadows fall in the right place is crucial and you have that spot on.

I like the way the image is off-centre.

I'm not sre about the window light bottom left - I think it should be cloned out.

Good elongated shot in a near letter box format. I'm not sure how much is shadow and how much is muck off the floor, but somehow Lulu looks a bit grubby. I think she could do with a bit of skin smoothing to tone that down.

It is a shame about the pillar and shadow on the right hand edge. Personallly I would clone that out - it is distracting.

The overall flow of the pose is very good, but the fingers on Lulu's right hand are awkward.

Lovely, gentle and serene. Nice use of the light giving some really smashing tones across the whole image. It does look slightly burnt out in the upright window right behind Lulu's face. I wonder if you can just bring the highlights down a touch.

The folds in the material look gorgeous and the lace work in the top shows up really well adding some really nice texture to the image.

Very striking portrait. Lighting is spot on. The eyes are terrific.

Because the light is quite hard I would favour a little more skin smoothing for a female face.

Although shot into the shoulder which often gives a large block of skin in the image, because you have shot into the shadow side it really reduces that down - very effective.

Similar comments about the skin smoothing for this image. But otherwise again a lovely shot. SHooting into the shadows is just so effective here. I love the way her hair is so strongly contrasted against the shadow of her top. At the same time, there is enough light in the clothes to really bring out the textures.

This is an interesting comparison after the previous two. While this is a perfectly fine shot - you can see how shooting on the lit side had made her whole torso look much flatter and is nothing like as strong an image as the previous two.

I'm not happy about the crop into the fingers - it looks a little accidental.

I do like the colours of the eyes and lips in this image.

I think you could crop much harder into the face and upper torso and get a much stronger image out of this.

Overall these are very good, you've clearly taken on board the whole issue of using shadows both as features and as ways of improving the image - well done.
