Critique for Carole B
Carole recently came on our "Fashion on the Streets" workshop with the lovely Carla Monaco working on the streets and alleyways of Cheltenham. Here is my critique of a selection of Carole's images.
Love the Dutch angle on this shot, adds a real strong dynamic to the image, Very well captured light, there is just enough detail in the shadow areas but the highlights are still contained. Love Carla's attitude.
Smashing use of the wide angle lens. I see too many images ruined by shooting too wide and keep saying it must only be used deliberately and this is a classic example of really effective use.
Couple of picky bits, zap the blue disc in the windscreen and see if you can drop the highlights on the dry floor, especially at the front of the limo, both are distracting.
Perfect formal shot, lovely straight pillars with those striking diagonal shadows. I'm bothered by the nose of the car on the right hand edge and Carla's body and face could be just a fraction lighter.
This is close, Carla just exudes "don't mess with me" and the sweep of the hand rail is great. I'm bugged by the way it gets all messy in the bottom right hand corner though. It is also a little flat in overall lighting, maybe a but more dodge and burn no Carla to bring out some more modelling.
Smashing catch lights in the eyes and nice balance with the fur and hair. The hands have gone a little red, try an adjustment layer and brush out some red saturation or try some red to yellow colour shifting.
I think this would be so much better as a black and white - it has the 60's vibe about it that a bit of monochrome would really help. I like the subtle use of the vignette, but it needs to be pulled back on her hands which look over dark.
You can tell by the fact that might comments are picky that I really like this set. I think you've captured some great stuff - very well seen compositionally throughout. More than anything just watch the hands and maybe tweak things a bit more in post processing. Most of these could easily handle some more "ooomphh" - i.e. contrast, punch, saturation in varying combinations. I think this could stand on its own as a monochrome set as well.
