AOP part 6: A Darker Portrait
On the very first set I shoot with anyone I always go through the same sequence of long shots, to medium, to tight portraits.
It is just a simple way of putting people at their ease and not getting right into the personal space from the beginning.
I always shoot around 100mm focal length if I can. That means for a tight portrait the end of the camera lens is maybe 12 inches from the eyes. That can feel quite intimidating to someone not used to it.
Even with an experienced model we are trying to establish some kind of working chemistry. To leap into each others faces right from the start would be odd to say the least.
