AOP part 35: Negative Space

In general I think Robert Capa's advice, "if your pictures are not strong enough, you are not close enough", is pretty good.

But there are times when negative space is required in an image.

Negative space is that part of the frame that has nothing in it.

You can use it to create shapes, in this picture the bottom right is a triangle created by the negative space. But in this case that's not the important bit.

You can also use it to create a sense of imbalance, which is what is happening here. (Picture previous page) This is essentially a picture of two halves, the subject and the negative space.

By keeping the negative space, it leaves the picture out of balance, which supports the idea of the leaning figure.
