THINKING:
Shooting in building like this one, it is very apparent just how many verticals there are and how strongly they dominate an image.
In posing your subject then you either work with the flow of the lines or deliberately against them.
Raphaella is a very natural poser and a strong understanding of how to work in an environment. I just needed to explain quickly what my visual feelings were and she could then pose with that in mind. With less experienced models you will have to provide more assistance.
SEEING:
A complicated background definitely, with a lot in it, but dominated by vertical lines.
Raphaella's triangular pose within those verticals is a perfect counterfoil.
The precision of the posing helps strengthen the image. Notice that the lines from shoulder to hand to feet are entirely consistent. Notice that the empty spaces between arms and body, then legs and chair are also consistent. These regular, echoed, triangles support each other in the fight against the strong verticals.
DOING:
Camera position is quite low down, level with the seat of the chair.
Whenever there are flat surfaces in an image it is best to shoot at the height of those surfaces otherwise they become strong in the frame.
Shooting low also helps push Raphaella higher against the background and lets her dominate this very busy environment.
