Homage to Parkinson
THINKING:
Norman Parkinson CBE (1913-1990) was a well known fashion photographer producing images for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and many other magazines.
While this image was not created directly in homage to Parkinson, it does adopt one of his signature styles, the inclusion of the surrounding environment.
Often his work would include the core studio setup, but also the studio around the setup.
SEEING:
Although there is a lot of clutter in the larger environment look at the way that the sofa and models are actually isolated. There is a clear division between them and the clutter.
At the same time, all that clutter provides strong leading lines directly to them. In this way, the eye is pulled directly to the key part of the image that stands framed within the larger space.
DOING:
The posing is quite careful constructed here. Starting with Alexx on the left (who describes herself as having "freakishly long legs"). One leg points to camera and the length cannot be seen, but by folding the other leg over we now get that sense of length back.
Next Shane, sitting on the left has her body turned so that again the legs are not pointing to camera. Then her hand comes back to Alexx's shoulder to join the two figures together.
Finally, all the posing is about repeating triangles. The largest triangle formed by the two girls together, but then repeated in their individual shapes, then spaces formed by arms and legs.
Of course, these physical triangles are also shown in the implied triangles of perspective created by the walls and ceiling.
