Voyeur
THINKING:
I often work to conceptual series. This image is from a series I title in my head "Voyeurism". The idea is to create images that look like they are voyeuristic grab shots.
Working to a series concept is very valuable as it gives you a continuous feed of ideas, scenes and styles to shoot and develop. As a series progresses you find new ways of expressing yourself and often develop new ways of seeing and new skills too.
SEEING:
An interesting style of shot to pull off because on the one hand it must not look over professional, but on the other hand must still have some photographic strength and quality.
In a considered image you would not normally allow that great swathes of black shadow to dominate the image, but here it both strongly defines the "grab shot" aspect and also puts Freya smaller in the frame, making her appear more vulnerable and dominated by the darkness.
DOING:
Models often have difficulty with this kind of setup since it requires them to look quite natural and not to pose. Of course they want to and train themselves to stand on tip-toe and pause for the shutter to fire.
What I do is ask the model to go through the steps of dressing in slow motion. This slow motion movement allows me to catch the right moment and ensures the model doesn't stop to pose. I will repeat this several times in succession.
You'll notice I said "dressing", not "undressing". It does depend on the model and my rapport with them. But I am very clear, a model undressing should not be a striptease for the photographer. It is one thing if it is a posed sequence, but this kind of slow undressing can become dangerously close to a striptease.
