Telling a Story

THINKING: I strongly favour what I call the "film direction" method of posing. That is I give the model a story and a scene and let them act into it.

Symmetry

THINKING: This location looks very busy in the final image - but on arrival there was even more stuff spread around than you see now!

Strong Backgrounds

THINKING: This image was shot on location in a night club. There were many spaces with interesting decoration around the club.

Stripes

THINKING: In general we try to avoid stripes in portraits, because stripes can so dominate an image.

Softness

THINKING: To create an image of softness (rather than a soft, out of focus image) you need to relate a number of features of the image.

Simplicity

THINKING: A shot seen so many times. Why do variations of this image have such appeal? Because of its absolute simplicity.

Silhouette

THINKING: I wanted to create some sculptural looking poses with Allex and Shane together. However, we were shooting in their small apartment and on the face of it was going to give me the simplicity of space that I was looking for.

Saving Images with Monochrome

THINKING: Sometimes you cannot achieve what you want to. In this image of Tillie posed within a corridor, I really wanted a colour shot.

Projection

THINKING: Projection in photography was once used a lot. Much like back projection in films it was used to provide a variety of backdrops.
